What Is a Physiological Sigh?
A physiological sigh is a specific breathing pattern your body already uses on its own, usually while you sleep, to reinflate collapsed air sacs in your lungs: two inhales through the nose back-to-back, the second one shorter and sharper than the first, followed by one long, slow exhale through the mouth. Neuroscientist Andrew Huberman and physiologist Kimberly Bong at Stanford’s School of Medicine studied this pattern deliberately, comparing it to slow breathing and mindfulness meditation, and found it lowered self-reported stress and physiological arousal faster than either alternative when practiced for just five minutes a day.
The Science Behind Why It Works So Fast
The double inhale does two things a single breath can’t. The first inhale opens the alveoli, the tiny air sacs in your lungs; the second, sharper inhale pops open any that stayed collapsed, maximizing the surface area available for gas exchange. The long exhale that follows offloads carbon dioxide efficiently, which is what actually shifts your nervous system out of a stressed state. Since your heart rate rises slightly on every inhale and falls on every exhale, stretching the exhale out longer than the inhale directly slows your heart rate and nudges your body toward its parasympathetic, “rest and digest” mode within one or two cycles, rather than the minutes it can take with generic deep breathing.
How to Do It (Step by Step)
Sit or stand comfortably. Inhale through your nose until your lungs feel about 80% full. Without exhaling, take a second, quick inhale through your nose to top off your lungs completely. Then exhale slowly and fully through your mouth, taking roughly twice as long as the two inhales combined. That’s one cycle. Repeat for one to three cycles when you need a fast reset, or up to five minutes if you’re using it as a standalone daily practice before a stressful meeting or at the end of a long day.
When to Use It
This technique shines in moments that need an immediate shift: right before walking into a job interview, in the elevator before a hard conversation, or when you notice your jaw clenching mid-deadline.
