The Forgetting Curve Is Working Against You
In the 1880s, psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus ran a simple but brutal experiment on himself: memorize lists of nonsense syllables, then test his recall at intervals afterward. What he found became known as the forgetting curve — without any review, we lose roughly half of new information within a day, and the majority within a week. This isn’t a flaw specific to you; it’s how human memory works by default.
Spaced repetition exploits a second finding buried in the same research: each time you successfully recall something right before you would have forgotten it, the memory gets stronger and the rate of forgetting slows down. Review at the right moment, and the next interval before you need to review again gets longer. Do this enough times, and a fact moves from your fragile short-term memory into something closer to permanent.
Why Cramming Fails and Spacing Wins
Cramming creates the illusion of learning because information feels fresh and accessible right after a study session. But because there’s no gap for forgetting to set in, there’s no retrieval effort — and effortless review does almost nothing to strengthen long-term memory. This is sometimes called the “spacing effect,” and it’s one of the most replicated findings in cognitive psychology: distributed practice beats massed practice for retention, even when total study time is identical.
Spaced repetition systems (SRS) — like Anki, RemNote, or even a simple paper-based Leitner box — automate this by tracking each individual fact and scheduling its next review based on how easily you recalled it last time. A fact you nailed instantly gets pushed weeks or months out. A fact you struggled with comes back the next day.
Building a Spaced Repetition Habit
You don’t need dedicated software to start. A basic Leitner system uses physical or digital flashcards sorted into boxes: Box 1 gets reviewed daily, Box 2 every three days, Box 3 weekly, and so on. A card you get right moves up a box (longer gap before the next review); a card you get wrong drops back to Box 1. Digital tools like Anki do this automatically with an algorithm, adjusting intervals to the day based on your performance, which is more precise but requires nothing more than 10-15 minutes a day to maintain even a large deck.
The key mistake people make is writing cards that ask for recognition rather than recall — “What does mitochondria do?” with the answer staring back at you isn’t nearly as effective as forcing yourself to produce the answer before checking it. Active recall, not passive review, is what drives the strengthening effect.
Where It Actually Pays Off
Spaced repetition is best suited to discrete facts: vocabulary, formulas, dates, medical terminology, anatomy, coding syntax, or anything with a clear right answer. It’s less suited to developing skills that require judgment or synthesis, like writing or strategic thinking — for those, deliberate practice matters more. Used on the right material, though, it can cut the time needed to permanently retain a body of knowledge by more than half compared to re-reading or highlighting, the two most common and least effective study methods students actually use.
